First, I'd like to say that I didn't get this doll, just the costume. I'm offended by the fact that Mattel has a disproportional number of blond Barbies. Even South Americans have to be blond? I wanted this for a dark haired girl and I don't want her to get the idea that dark hair isn't beautiful. So I try to get her more brunettes than blonds although she has quite a few blonds too. Ok. No big deal- I got just the costume and a brunette Barbie. That's when I discovered that Mattel have gone totally crazy! Because the clothes don't fit the other Barbie- they're too small. My Barbie is too fat! HONESTLY! Alright, so Barbie has never really projected a normal body image for girls, but now they make them even skinnier? I'm not a zealot about things like this and I do like the dolls in general and appreciate the dolls of the world in particular, but really there is a limit. I think I'm done getting Barbies as gifts for any young girl I know. I don't want them to end up anorexic.

Long story short, this doll was supposed to have an updo, not a huge out of proportion ponytail. The facial screening was very different as well. Mattel hides behind a disclaimer on every pre-release photo that states: "Production doll may vary from the photo shown above. Mattel reserves the right to modify the fashion/fabrics, sculpt, hair color/style, and accessories." They fall back on this as an excuse for shoddy workmanship and changes that are simply unacceptable. I don't know if this legally protects them from bait and switch accusations or not, but after collecting for such a long time, I am sick of the excuses. The only thing Mattel does when a doll is defective or if you are not satisfied is to offer a refund, even when it would make more financial sense and better customer service to fix the problem. Most of the time, the doll looks like the promo picture. This is one of the few times that it doesn't. So, when you order this doll, be sure to look at the in-box two photos at the top of the page. That is what the hair actually looks like, and it's the doll you will actually get.
As for the product itself, it's a pretty good doll. The original doll will look nice in some other fashion, and the hair can be restyled. The outfit is exactly what it should be, and is not sewn onto the doll. For people who take them out of the box for play, this is a great outfit for other dolls, and goes nicely on Model Muse bodies. I put the outfit on a James Bond Live and Let Die Solitaire doll, and it looks fantastic on her. (I uploaded a picture.) This dress is really meant for a doll with short hair or an updo, not a long, 1950s style pony tail. Some people may actually love the production doll as-is. For those who leave their dolls in the box, for those who collect Dolls of the World exclusively, and for those who don't care about the hair, you'll probably be more than satisfied with her. That's the only reason that I rate this doll so highly. Otherwise I would have sent mine back for a refund and given it one star for not being what I had expected. I wish that instead of printing pink Barbie pass ports that no one will ever use, they would have put the money into manufacturing the doll we had been promised.
